This fall, sports teams at Rochester’s Old Colony Regional Vocational Technical High School will have permanent field lights for the first time in school history.

Old Colony athletic director Matt Trahan has waited 15 years for the permanent field lights to make their way to the school. It means the world to him and the Cougar community. “I’ve been pushing for lights the past 15 years. It means so much to us and our student athletes to showcase their talents. We have a great following and our school community loves night games.” Said Matt Trahan when asked what finally getting the lights meant to him and the school community.

Old Colony head football coach Brandon Mendez is also ecstatic about the addition of the lights. “It’s an exciting time for us. We have gotten fired up over the past few years having the portable lights come in and anytime we played at night on the road. Alumni loves it, the student body loves it, families come out in full force. There is something special about high school football under the lights that everyone in the community can get behind.” Mendez mentioned the portable lights that the school had donated for the last few years at homecoming weekend. Only a small sample size of the excitement the lights can bring.

The football team will not be the only team benefitting from the new lights.

“Soccer and lacrosse will have an opportunity to play under the lights” stated AD Matt Trahan.

Brandon Mendez also believes the lights will bring in more than just fans too. “I have heard time and time over that students are staying at their sending school just because we don’t have lights. If Friday night football is the way to show our community how great of a place OC is, we will do everything we can to put the best product on the field and represent our school the best way we can.”

Senior football captain Matt Bumpus thrives off the added energy and welcomes the added pressure of the Friday night lights. “Playing under the lights on a Friday night is a huge boost in energy for us because we don’t get to do it all the time. I think the team plays better because it brings all the energy out in us.”

The Old Colony football team will square off against fierce rivals Upper Cape Tech on homecoming night (10/18) for the first sporting event under the new lights.
